Why You Need a Licensed RCIC for Your Canadian Immigration Application

Home/Blog/Why You Need a Licensed RCIC for Your Canadian Immigration Application

Only Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) and lawyers are authorized to provide immigration advice in Canada for a fee. Here is why this matters and what to look for in a consultant.

Canadian immigration law is complex and constantly changing. A single mistake on an application — an incomplete document, a misunderstood eligibility criteria, or an incorrectly answered question — can result in a refusal that affects not just your current application but all future ones. Working with a licensed professional is not just convenient; in many situations, it is the most important investment you can make in your immigration journey.

What Is an RCIC?

A Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) is a professional licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). RCICs must pass rigorous examinations, maintain ongoing education requirements, carry professional liability insurance, and adhere to a strict code of professional conduct. Only RCICs and immigration lawyers are legally allowed to charge fees for immigration advice or representation in Canada.

The Risk of Unauthorized Representatives

Immigration fraud is widespread. 'Ghost consultants' — unlicensed individuals who charge fees for immigration services — operate illegally and put clients at serious risk. They may file incorrect applications, miss deadlines, or simply disappear with your money. IRCC does not recognize submissions made by unauthorized representatives, and if your application is flagged, it can result in a ban from future applications. Always verify your consultant's RCIC number on the CICC public register at college-ic.ca.

What a Good RCIC Does for You

A qualified RCIC assesses your full profile — education, work history, language scores, family situation — and identifies the programs you are most likely to qualify for. They prepare documents strategically, ensuring everything is presented in the strongest possible light. When complications arise (medical inadmissibility, criminal history, previous refusals), they know the right responses and procedures. At ITC iLand, our RCICs hold CICC membership, CAPIC Gold status, and provincial credentials across Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Quebec.
